Andrea Grossi is one of the most distinctive voices of the new European creative music scene. Born in Monza in 1992, he is a double bassist, composer and improviser whose work moves fluidly between contemporary jazz, free improvisation and experimental composition, with a strong focus on sound research and collective interaction.
As a bandleader, he has released several critically acclaimed albums, including Lubok, Four Winds, Songs and Poems and AXES, the latter recorded with his trio Blend 3 and drummer Jim Black. His music has been released by leading international labels such as Clean Feed, Red Records, Stradivarius, Caligola and WE INSIST! Records. Founded in 2017, Blend 3 has become one of the most recognised Italian groups of the new generation, regularly appearing in the Top Jazzcritics’ poll of Musica Jazz magazine.
Alongside his work as a leader, Grossi is a highly sought-after sideman and collaborator. He has performed and recorded with major figures of the international improvised music scene, including Uri Caine, Jim Black, Barre Phillips, Michael Formanek, Gerry Hemingway, Eyvind Kang, Aruán Ortiz, Gordon Grdina, Christian Lillinger and many others. His activity also extends to contemporary classical music and interdisciplinary projects, collaborating with ensembles, dancers, visual artists and filmmakers.
Grossi has performed extensively across Europe and in the United States and has received numerous awards, including the Special Mention at the Giorgio Gaslini International Prize and top rankings in the Musica Jazz “Top Jazz” poll as New Talent, Musician of the Year and Best Album. He holds degrees in Jazz Double Bass and Jazz Composition from the Arrigo Boito Conservatory in Parma and is widely regarded as a central figure in today’s European creative music landscape.
